Tool Grinding goes Digital with ToolScope

The process of manufacturing the perfect tool is not only our mission as it is as well for our customer Ceratizit. The difference is that at the end of the process chain they will have a milling tool ground with our wheels.

Complex geometries and high endurable materials don’t make that mission easy. This leads us to support the process with our ToolScope system on a Vollmer tool grinding machine, which is now our first serial production machine in that business segment equipped with our process assistance system.

With the finalisation of the interface between ToolScope and Vollmer machines we were finally able to integrate the system in the serial production machine. Together with our customer we created a digital task force to output the best possible results. This teamwork will not only lead to an increase of knowledge in using ToolScope for tool grinding, it also opened the doors for our tools in several other applications.

The targets are the optimisation of the sharpening cycle and fingerprinting of the existing processes. A tool grinding wheel needs to be sharpened periodically which is usually defined through out the process knowhow of the experts on site or together with our application engineering but never set at the possible maximum due to safety tolerances.

With ToolScope it is possible to generate specific values as indication of a not sharp grinding wheel. In our ongoing work we will firstly document the actual cycles and provide optimisation strategies and in a final stadium the indication should be sent to the machine and lead to an adaptive sharpening cycle.  This will not only safe grinding wheel and sharpening stone wear, but mostly optimise the productive time on the machine.
